A striking 1911 exhibition poster by Franz von Stuck, featuring a symbolic eye motif and classical architectural elements.
This graphic work by Franz von Stuck was commissioned for the 1911 International Hygiene Exhibition held in Dresden. The design reflects the aesthetic sensibilities of the Munich Secession, a movement that sought to break away from traditional academic art in favour of modern, stylised forms. Von Stuck, a founding member of the group, employs a bold, symbolic visual language to communicate the exhibition's themes of scientific progress and public health.
The composition is divided into two distinct zones. The upper portion features a large, stylised eye radiating light against a deep violet sky filled with star-like bursts. This imagery suggests clarity, observation, and the enlightenment brought by medical science. Below this, the text is framed by classical columns, grounding the ethereal upper section in architectural order. The typography is integrated into the design, reflecting the period's focus on the unity of text and image in commercial art.
Von Stuck was known for his work in painting, sculpture, and architecture, and his approach to poster design often utilised high-contrast elements and symbolic motifs. The use of the eye as a central icon serves to draw the viewer's attention immediately, while the limited colour palette of violet, black, and cream ensures the message remains legible. This print captures the intersection of early twentieth-century graphic design and the cultural push towards modernisation in Germany. It remains a representative example of how artists of the era applied their individual styles to public communication and event promotion.
