A classic Dutch Golden Age genre painting by Pieter de Hooch, depicting a quiet domestic scene of women organising linen in a structured interior.
Pieter de Hooch, a master of the Dutch Golden Age, produced this work in 1663. It depicts a domestic scene, a subject for which the artist is well known. Two women stand before a large, wooden linen cupboard, engaged in the orderly task of storing household textiles. The composition is structured around the interplay of light and space, a hallmark of de Hooch's approach to interior scenes.
The room features a chequered floor, which provides a sense of geometric order and depth. To the right, a doorway opens into a secondary space, revealing a glimpse of an exterior courtyard and another figure, a child playing with a hoop. This use of a view through an open door is a recurring device in the artist's work, connecting the private interior with the public or semi-public world outside.
The colour palette is restrained, relying on warm wood tones, the deep red and white of the floor tiles, and the muted garments of the figures. The light enters from the window, illuminating the textures of the linen and the fabric of the women's clothing. The painting reflects the values of the Dutch middle class during the seventeenth century, where domestic order, cleanliness, and the management of a household were considered virtues. The presence of the large cupboard, a significant piece of furniture in a Dutch home, reinforces the theme of domestic stability.
De Hooch's ability to render the quiet atmosphere of a home, combined with his technical skill in perspective and light, makes this piece a representative example of his mature style. The work remains in the collection of the Rijksmuseum, where it continues to be studied for its technical execution and its depiction of seventeenth-century social life.
