A 1663 architectural design by Pieter Jansz. Post for the interior of a Dutch state yacht, featuring river nymphs and classical motifs.
This drawing by Pieter Jansz. Post, dated 1663, depicts a design for the interior decoration of a statenjacht, a state yacht used by the Dutch Republic. Post, a prominent architect and painter of the Dutch Golden Age, was known for his work on major buildings such as the Mauritshuis in The Hague. This specific design illustrates his ability to integrate classical motifs into functional maritime spaces.
The composition is divided into three sections by architectural framing. Two reclining river nymphs occupy the outer panels, each positioned beside a water vessel that serves as a fountain. Between these figures, a central panel features a view of a distant harbour with ships, framed by ornate pilasters. The inclusion of putti riding dolphins adds a playful, mythological element common in seventeenth-century decorative schemes. The drawing uses a restrained palette, relying on ink lines for structure and subtle washes of yellow and grey to define the forms and suggest light.
As a preparatory study, the work provides insight into the meticulous planning required for high-status commissions. The artist balances the requirements of the curved hull shape with the need for clear, legible iconography. The text at the top of the sheet provides context for the intended location within the vessel, specifically the 'Saal' or main cabin. This piece reflects the period's interest in combining naval engineering with the aesthetic refinement of the Dutch elite. The precision of the line work and the balanced arrangement of the figures demonstrate the technical skill expected of a master architect during this era. It remains a clear example of how classical themes were adapted for the unique constraints of Dutch maritime architecture.
