A detailed historical etching depicting the interior of the Spinhuis in Amsterdam, showing women at work in a seventeenth-century house of correction.
This etching depicts the interior of the Spinhuis, a house of correction for women in Amsterdam. The Spinhuis functioned as a penal institution where inmates were required to perform manual labour, primarily spinning wool, as a form of rehabilitation and punishment. The print provides a clear view of the institutional space, showing rows of women seated at spinning wheels under the supervision of an overseer.
The composition employs a linear perspective to draw the eye toward the back wall, where a raised desk or pulpit is positioned. This architectural arrangement reflects the orderly, controlled nature of the facility. The ceiling features exposed wooden beams, a common element in Dutch civic buildings of the period. The windows allow light to flood the room, illuminating the figures and the repetitive nature of their daily tasks.
Such prints were often produced to document the social and penal systems of the Dutch Republic. They offer a glimpse into the daily operations of institutions that were central to the urban management of the era. The artist uses precise, fine lines to define the structural elements of the room and the individual figures, creating a documentary record of the environment. The inclusion of the title 'T' SPIN-HVIS' at the top of the image confirms the subject matter, identifying the specific location for contemporary viewers. This work is a valuable historical document, capturing the intersection of social policy, labour, and architecture in eighteenth-century Amsterdam. It provides a visual account of the disciplinary practices that defined the lives of those within the Spinhuis walls.
