Ink Bamboo - Li Shan

A classic example of Qing dynasty literati painting, this work by Li Shan combines expressive ink bamboo with elegant calligraphy.

This work by Li Shan, a member of the Eight Eccentrics of Yangzhou, demonstrates the expressive potential of ink wash painting. The composition balances a cluster of bamboo stalks and leaves in the lower left with a substantial column of calligraphy occupying the upper right. The bamboo is rendered with varying degrees of ink saturation, suggesting depth and movement as the stalks sway. Li Shan employs a calligraphic brush technique, where the speed and pressure of the stroke define the form of the leaves and stems.

The integration of text and image is a hallmark of the literati tradition. The calligraphy, executed in a fluid, cursive script, provides a rhythmic counterpoint to the organic forms of the bamboo. The artist uses the negative space of the paper to allow the subject to breathe, a technique common in Qing dynasty ink painting. The work is dated to 1749, corresponding to the fourteenth year of the Qianlong reign, as noted in the inscription.

Li Shan was known for his unconventional approach to traditional subjects, often favouring spontaneity over rigid adherence to academic standards. His work reflects the individualistic spirit of the Yangzhou school, which sought to revitalise classical themes through personal interpretation. The bamboo, a symbol of resilience and moral integrity in Chinese culture, is here treated with a focus on the physical act of painting. The ink tones range from deep, saturated blacks to translucent greys, creating a sense of atmosphere. This print captures the subtle nuances of the original ink work, preserving the texture of the brushwork and the balance between the written word and the painted image.
