A detailed 18th-century engraving by Giuseppe Camerata, depicting the infant Bacchus after a composition by Guido Reni.
This fine art print by Giuseppe Camerata reproduces a composition attributed to the Italian Baroque master Guido Reni. Camerata, an Italian engraver active in Dresden, produced this work as part of a larger project to document the contents of the Royal Gallery of Dresden. The print captures a playful, mythological scene featuring the infant Bacchus, the god of wine, depicted with the characteristic plumpness and soft modelling typical of the period's allegorical art.
The figure of the young Bacchus is shown kneeling, adorned with a crown of vine leaves and grapes. He holds a glass vessel to his lips, while a wooden barrel sits beside him, from which liquid flows into a basin. The composition balances the central figure against a simple, suggestive background, allowing the viewer to focus on the anatomical rendering of the child. Camerata employs precise hatching and cross-hatching techniques to define the musculature and the texture of the foliage, demonstrating the technical rigour expected of eighteenth-century reproductive printmakers.
At the base of the print, the text provides provenance details, noting the work was drawn by Francesco Gandini and engraved by Camerata after the original painting in the Dresden collection. The inclusion of the royal crest and bilingual inscriptions in Italian and French reflects the international nature of courtly art collecting during the Enlightenment. This print offers a window into the methods by which European galleries disseminated their collections to a wider audience before the advent of photography. The work remains a fine example of the reproductive printmaking tradition, where the engraver sought to translate the tonal qualities of oil painting into the linear language of copperplate engraving. It is a piece that speaks to the historical appreciation of Reni's style and the meticulous craft of the printmaker.
