Emily Carr produced this work following her return to British Columbia from a period of study in France. The painting depicts a traditional dugout canoe resting on the shore at Alert Bay, a village on Cormorant Island. The vessel features a prominent carved figure, rendered with the bold, rhythmic brushwork that defined Carr's mature style. Her application of paint is thick and deliberate, creating a sense of physical weight and presence for the wooden structure.
In the background, the coastal environment is suggested through simplified forms and a bright, clear palette. The large conifer tree looming over the canoe provides a dark, vertical counterpoint to the horizontal lines of the boat and the distant shoreline. Carr was deeply interested in the cultural objects of the Indigenous peoples of the Pacific Northwest Coast, and she documented these subjects with a focus on their form and their integration into the natural environment. The composition avoids excessive detail, opting instead for a direct, expressive interpretation of the scene.
This work reflects the influence of the Fauvist and Post-Impressionist techniques Carr encountered in Europe, which she adapted to capture the specific light and atmosphere of the Canadian West Coast. The colour choices are non-naturalistic, used to convey the energy of the subject rather than a literal transcription of the scene. The canoe, with its painted zoomorphic figure, acts as the primary subject, while the surrounding village and sky are treated with a looser, more gestural approach. This painting is representative of her early efforts to synthesise European modernism with the distinct visual culture of her home region.
