A detailed 1717 ink and wash drawing by Jacob Colin documenting the formal inauguration of Emperor Charles VI in Ghent.
This drawing by Jacob Colin depicts the formal inauguration of Emperor Charles VI within the interior of St Bavo's Cathedral in Ghent. Executed in 1717, the work captures the rigid hierarchy and ceremonial order of the event. The composition employs a high vantage point, allowing the viewer to observe the entire assembly from the nave, looking towards the raised dais where the Emperor is positioned.
The architectural setting is rendered with precise linear perspective. The cathedral interior is defined by clean, thin ink lines that delineate the tiled floor, the balustrades, and the soaring arches of the structure. Colin uses grey wash to create depth and shadow, separating the foreground figures from the more distant participants seated in the choir area. The figures are arranged in a symmetrical fashion, reflecting the formal nature of the political proceedings. Each group of attendees is placed according to their rank, with the Emperor elevated at the centre of the composition under a canopy.
As a historical record, the drawing provides insight into the visual culture of the early 18th-century Austrian Netherlands. It functions as a documentary piece, focusing on the spatial arrangement and the scale of the cathedral rather than individual portraiture. The artist avoids excessive ornamentation, choosing instead to emphasise the geometry of the space and the orderly conduct of the ceremony. The work remains a clear example of how draughtsmen of the period utilised wash techniques to manage complex interior scenes, ensuring that the architectural features remain legible despite the density of the crowd.
