Beskrivning
A classic woodblock print from Hiroshige's One Hundred Famous Views of Edo, featuring a framed perspective of the Inari Bridge and Mount Fuji.
This woodblock print is part of the series One Hundred Famous Views of Edo, produced by Utagawa Hiroshige between 1856 and 1858. The composition employs a characteristic device of the artist: the use of large, vertical foreground elements to frame a distant scene. Here, two massive wooden poles dominate the foreground, creating a geometric structure that directs the eye toward the Inari Bridge and the Minato Shrine in the Teppōzu district of Edo.
Beyond the bridge, the scene opens to reveal the rooftops of the city, with Mount Fuji visible in the distance against a soft, gradient sky. The transition from the deep indigo of the upper sky to the pale pink of the horizon demonstrates the sophisticated bokashi technique, where ink is wiped across the woodblock to create smooth colour gradations. Small boats navigate the canal, adding a sense of daily activity to the quiet urban environment. The red wall of the shrine provides a strong colour contrast against the blue water and the muted tones of the city buildings.
Hiroshige was a master of the late Edo period, and his work in this series captures the atmosphere of the city with precision. By placing the viewer behind the foreground poles, he creates a sense of physical presence within the space. The print reflects the artist's ability to balance graphic design with natural observation, a quality that influenced many European artists in the late nineteenth century. The inclusion of the cartouche in the upper right corner, containing the series and print titles, is a standard feature of the format, providing context for the specific location depicted in this view of Edo.
