Beskrivning

A serene utopian vision by Paul Signac, depicting a peaceful society in harmony with nature, rendered in the distinctive style of Neo-Impressionism.

In the Time of Harmony, originally titled Au temps d'harmonie, represents a significant shift in the work of Paul Signac. While he is primarily recognised for his coastal scenes and harbour views, this composition reflects his engagement with anarchist political philosophy. The scene depicts a Mediterranean shoreline where figures engage in leisure, education, and light agricultural tasks, suggesting a society free from the pressures of industrialisation.

The composition is structured with a clear foreground, middle ground, and background, moving away from the purely optical experiments of earlier Neo-Impressionist works. Signac employs a systematic application of colour, though the palette here is softer and more pastel than his typical high-contrast pointillist works. The figures are arranged in a rhythmic, almost frieze-like manner, echoing classical pastoral traditions while updating the subject matter to reflect contemporary social ideals.

In the foreground, a family relaxes under a tree, while a man reaches for fruit, reinforcing the theme of abundance. Further back, figures dance, read, and paint, suggesting a life balanced between physical labour and intellectual pursuit. The inclusion of a distant ship and a calm sea provides a sense of openness and freedom. The work functions as a visual manifesto for a peaceful, egalitarian future. Signac spent several years refining the composition, ensuring that the balance between the human figures and the natural environment remained stable. The result is a calm, orderly vision of human existence, far removed from the urban chaos of late nineteenth-century Paris. This print captures the delicate line work and the specific colour relationships that define Signac's approach to utopian subject matter, offering a window into the intersection of art and political theory during the fin de siècle period.

Artist Biography

Paul Signac

Paul Signac, a pivotal figure in the Pointillist movement, often stands in the shadow of his more famous friend, Georges Seurat. However, Signac's contribution to the development and popularisation of this revolutionary technique is undeniable. Born in Paris in 1863, he initially trained as an architect before finding his true calling in painting. Unlike many of his contemporaries, Signac came from a relatively wealthy background, allowing him the freedom to pursue his artistic passions without the immediate pressure of commercial success.

Signac embraced Pointillism after encountering Seurat's *A Sunday on La Grande Jatte* in 1884. Captivated by the scientific approach to colour and light, he became a devoted follower and, later, a leading advocate of the style. Following Seurat's untimely death in 1891, Signac stepped into the role of the movement's champion, ensuring its continued influence on the avant-garde. His own works, such as *The Red Buoy* and *Antibes, Evening*, showcase his mastery of the technique, using vibrant dots of pure colour to create luminous and harmonious compositions.

Beyond his artistic output, Signac was also a dedicated writer and theorist. His book, *From Eugène Delacroix to Neo-Impressionism*, remains a seminal text on the subject, providing invaluable insights into the principles and philosophy behind Pointillism. Signac's passion for sailing also profoundly influenced his art, with many of his paintings depicting coastal scenes and harbours across France. He died in 1935, leaving behind a legacy as both a talented artist and a key intellectual force within the Neo-Impressionist movement.
