A refined 18th-century Japanese woodblock print by Nishimura Shigenaga, depicting a young attendant in a patterned kimono with floral motifs.
This woodblock print by Nishimura Shigenaga represents the mid-Edo period style of ukiyo-e. The work is identified as the centre sheet of a triptych, depicting a young page or attendant. Shigenaga was a teacher to several notable artists, including Harunobu, and his work often features the bold, graphic lines characteristic of early printmaking in Japan.
The figure is rendered with a focus on linear clarity. The subject wears a kimono decorated with motifs of pine and bamboo, symbols of longevity and resilience. The garment is layered with a plaid-patterned outer robe, demonstrating the artist's attention to textile detail. The figure holds a small vessel containing chrysanthemums, which adds a seasonal element to the composition. The colour palette is restrained, relying on the natural tone of the paper and hand-applied pigments typical of the urushi-e or lacquer-print technique.
Shigenaga's approach to the figure is stylised, with a focus on the silhouette and the arrangement of patterns across the fabric. The composition is flat, avoiding the use of deep perspective to maintain the decorative integrity of the print. The inclusion of two swords at the figure's waist suggests a status associated with the samurai class, despite the youthful appearance of the attendant. This print provides a view into the aesthetic preferences of the 18th-century urban population in Edo, where fashion and theatre culture influenced the subjects chosen by artists. The work remains a clear example of the technical transition from monochrome prints to the multi-coloured works that would define the later decades of the century.
