Franz Marc, a founding member of Der Blaue Reiter, produced In the Rain in 1912. This period marked a shift in his practice towards a more abstract, geometric language influenced by Cubism and Futurism. The composition depicts a figure and a dog amidst a storm, yet the subject matter is secondary to the rhythmic arrangement of colour and form.
Marc utilised a palette of saturated reds, greens, and blues to convey the atmospheric tension of a downpour. The diagonal lines that cut across the canvas suggest the force of the rain, while the fragmented shapes of the foliage and the figures create a sense of movement. Rather than attempting a realistic depiction of the scene, Marc sought to represent the spiritual essence of the natural world. He often assigned symbolic meanings to colours, with blue representing masculinity and spirituality, yellow representing femininity and joy, and red representing the material world.
In this work, the interplay of these colours creates a dynamic visual experience. The dog, positioned in the lower right, provides a grounding element within the otherwise fractured space. The painting reflects the broader European interest in non-representational art during the early twentieth century, where artists moved away from traditional perspective to explore the emotional potential of pure form and colour. Artist Biography
Franz Marc
In 1911, Marc co-founded Der Blaue Reiter (The Blue Rider) with Wassily Kandinsky, a pivotal group that championed abstract art and spiritual expression. This collective fostered an environment of experimentation and collaboration, pushing the boundaries of modern art. Key works such as "The Large Blue Horses" and "Fighting Forms" exemplify Marc's distinctive style, characterised by bold colours, simplified forms, and a deep sense of empathy for the animal kingdom. He believed that by portraying animals, he could reveal a deeper, more authentic reality.
Tragically, Franz Marc's artistic journey was cut short during World War I. He volunteered for military service and was killed in action at Verdun in 1916, at the age of 36. Despite his untimely death, Marc's legacy endures as a visionary artist who sought to capture the spiritual essence of nature and explore the depths of human emotion through his vibrant and expressive paintings.
