A nineteenth-century woodblock print documenting the arrival of foreign vessels and Western influence in the port of Yokohama.
This woodblock print originates from the 1862 publication, Yokohama kaikō kenbunshi, or Illustrations of What We Have Seen and Heard at Yokohama. Created by Hashimoto Gyokuran, the work documents the rapid cultural and technological shifts occurring in Japan following the opening of Yokohama as a treaty port. The imagery captures the curiosity surrounding foreign presence, specifically focusing on the activities of Westerners.
The composition is divided into two distinct panels, each framed within a rectangular border. The left panel depicts individuals engaged in fishing, with a focus on the equipment and the catch. The right panel shows figures observing a large sailing vessel on the horizon, reflecting the maritime influence that defined the era. The artist employs a linear style, typical of mid-nineteenth-century Japanese book illustration, to record these observations with clarity. The figures are rendered in a manner that balances traditional Japanese drawing techniques with the necessity of documenting unfamiliar Western attire and nautical technology.
As a historical record, this print provides insight into the Japanese perspective on the arrival of foreign ships and the subsequent changes in local life. The work functions as a visual chronicle of the Bakumatsu period, a time of significant transition. By documenting these encounters, Gyokuran offers a view into the intersection of two cultures. The print remains a valuable example of how woodblock printing was utilised to disseminate information about the changing world to a domestic audience. The paper shows the natural ageing expected of a nineteenth-century publication, with a warm, aged tone that complements the monochromatic ink lines.
