A precise, linear etching by Bonaventura Genelli depicting a scene from Dante's Inferno, featuring the figure of Bertrand de Born.
This etching by Bonaventura Genelli depicts a specific moment from Canto 28 of Dante Alighieri's Inferno. The scene illustrates the punishment of Bertrand de Born, who is shown holding his own severed head aloft like a lantern. Genelli, a German artist who spent significant time in Rome, was deeply influenced by the classical tradition and the works of the Italian Renaissance. His approach to this subject relies on precise, clean lines and a focus on anatomical form, which is characteristic of his graphic work.
The composition is structured around the central figure of Bertrand de Born, whose muscular back is turned toward the viewer. To the left, a winged figure observes the scene, while Dante and Virgil are positioned in the upper right, looking down from a ledge. The surrounding figures in the lower register represent other souls suffering in the ninth bolgia of the eighth circle of hell. Genelli avoids heavy shading or atmospheric effects, preferring a stark, linear clarity that directs attention to the narrative action and the physical tension of the bodies.
Genelli's series of illustrations for Dante's Divine Comedy reflects his interest in the dramatic potential of classical draughtsmanship. By stripping away colour and complex textures, he forces the viewer to engage with the structural integrity of the figures and the spatial relationships within the frame. This work is a clear example of the nineteenth-century fascination with epic literature, interpreted through a rigorous, academic lens. The print captures the grim nature of the source text while maintaining a formal restraint that is typical of the artist's style. It is a study in movement and anatomy, presented with the discipline of a classical sculptor.
