A detailed woodblock triptych by Utagawa Hiroshige III depicting the Tsukiji Hotel and its gardens during the early Meiji period in Tokyo.
This woodblock print by Utagawa Hiroshige III captures the Tsukiji Hotel, a structure that symbolised the rapid modernisation of Tokyo during the early Meiji period. The hotel, designed by Shimizu Kisuke, was a hybrid of Western architectural forms and traditional Japanese construction. Hiroshige III, a student of the famous Hiroshige, documented these changes in the urban environment with a focus on the new, Western-influenced lifestyle of the city residents.
The composition is a triptych, showing a wide, panoramic view of the hotel grounds. The foreground features a manicured garden with winding gravel paths, where figures dressed in a mix of traditional kimono and Western-style clothing stroll. This juxtaposition of attire reflects the social transition occurring in Japan at the time. The middle ground is occupied by the hotel building and its surrounding greenery, while the background reveals the Tokyo Bay waterfront, complete with sailing ships and steamers, indicating the importance of maritime trade and international contact.
The colour palette is characteristic of the period, utilising synthetic aniline dyes that were introduced to Japan in the late 19th century. These pigments allow for the bright reds of the horizon and the distinct blues of the water. The print serves as a visual record of the Tsukiji district, which was designated as a foreign settlement. The artist employs a clear, descriptive style to document the architecture and the social activity within the space. The work provides a view into a specific moment of transition, where the traditional aesthetic of the woodblock print meets the subject matter of industrialisation and Westernisation in Japan.
