A late eighteenth-century etching depicting a dramatic narrative scene, designed by Swiss artist Benjamin Samuel Bolomey for a literary collection.
This etching serves as a book illustration for the collection titled Bibliothèque de campagne, ou Amusemens de l'esprit et du coeur. The composition depicts a dramatic narrative scene, likely drawn from the sentimental literature popular in the late eighteenth century. A figure lies recumbent upon the ground, appearing either in a state of deep slumber or distress, while a second figure stands nearby, gesturing with an expression of concern or discovery. The setting suggests a cavernous or shadowed interior, rendered with cross-hatching and varied line weights to create a sense of atmospheric depth.
Benjamin Samuel Bolomey, a Swiss painter and draughtsman, provided the original design for this print, which was subsequently engraved by C. Boily. The collaboration between the designer (indicated by 'del.' for delineavit) and the engraver (indicated by 'sculp.' for sculpsit) was standard practice for eighteenth-century literary publications. The style reflects the aesthetic preferences of the period, prioritising clear narrative action and a balanced distribution of light and shadow. The etching technique allows for a high degree of detail in the drapery of the figures and the texture of the surrounding environment, typical of the refined graphic arts produced for the European reading public during this era.
This print offers a glimpse into the visual culture of the late Enlightenment, where literature and the fine arts were closely linked. The work functions as a visual accompaniment to the text, capturing a moment of emotional tension that invites the reader to imagine the surrounding narrative. The technical execution demonstrates the precision of the engraver's craft, translating Bolomey's initial drawing into a durable medium suitable for mass distribution within a bound volume.
