A classic illustration by Ivan Bilibin for the Russian fairy tale 'The White Duck', featuring his signature ink-line style and decorative folk motifs.
This work by Ivan Bilibin captures a scene from the Russian folk tale 'The White Duck'. Bilibin, a central figure in the Mir Iskusstva (World of Art) circle, developed a distinct graphic style inspired by traditional Russian woodblock prints, lubok, and medieval manuscript illumination. His approach relies on precise, clean ink outlines filled with flat, muted colour washes, creating a graphic clarity that defines his contribution to early twentieth-century book illustration.
The composition features a character looking out from a wooden tower, overlooking a fortified coastal settlement. The architecture displays the characteristic onion domes and carved timber details associated with historical Russian design. Below, a fleet of ships sails across the water, rendered with the stylised, rhythmic quality typical of Bilibin's work. The entire scene is enclosed within a decorative border, a hallmark of his page design, which integrates the illustration into the physical structure of the book.
Bilibin spent years travelling through northern Russia, documenting wooden architecture and folk costumes. This research informs the accuracy of the structural details seen here. The flattened perspective and emphasis on line over volume reflect his interest in decorative arts rather than naturalistic representation. By stripping away unnecessary shadow and depth, he focuses the viewer on the narrative elements and the rhythmic patterns of the environment. This print offers a clear example of the Bilibin style, where the boundary between fine art and graphic design dissolves. The work remains a primary reference for the visual interpretation of Slavic folklore, demonstrating a synthesis of historical research and modern graphic sensibilities.
