A traditional Chinese woodblock print featuring Tang Dynasty poetry and delicate botanical illustration from the Eight Kinds of Painting Manuals.
This woodblock print originates from the 'Eight Kinds of Painting Manuals', a collection produced during the Qing Dynasty. Cai Chonghuan, a skilled artisan of the period, contributed to the dissemination of classical Chinese aesthetics through these instructional volumes. The work combines the literary tradition of Tang Dynasty poetry with visual representations of flora, a practice common in the pedagogical texts of the time.
The image displays a double-page spread. On the right, vertical columns of Chinese calligraphy present a poem, likely by the Tang poet Wang Wei, given the reference to 'Zhuli Guan' (Bamboo Pavilion). The text is rendered in a clear, formal script, accompanied by traditional red seal impressions. On the left, a monochrome illustration depicts a flowering branch, possibly plum or cherry blossom, emerging from a rocky outcrop near a stream. The artist uses varied line weights to define the gnarled texture of the wood and the delicate structure of the blossoms.
Woodblock printing in this era relied on the precision of the carver to translate the fluidity of brushwork into a permanent matrix. The composition follows the conventions of literati painting, where the balance between text and image is maintained to provide both intellectual and visual stimulation. The paper shows the natural ageing typical of historical documents, with a warm, off-white tone that complements the black ink. This print offers a glimpse into the methods used to teach painting techniques and preserve literary heritage in pre-modern China. It is a functional object, designed for study and reference, yet it possesses a refined quality that reflects the artistic standards of the Qing period.
