Carlo Carrà, a figure associated with the development of Italian modernism, produced this work in 1966, the final year of his life. The composition depicts a solitary figure seated upon a shoreline, gazing out towards a calm sea. A small boat rests in the water, while a dark, horizontal structure occupies the distance, creating a sense of quiet isolation. The application of paint is direct and unadorned, reflecting the artist's later stylistic shift away from the dynamism of his earlier Futurist period toward a more contemplative, simplified approach to form and space.
