Beskrivning
A striking Neo-Primitivist work by Natalia Goncharova, blending traditional Russian icon aesthetics with modern avant-garde sensibilities.
Natalia Goncharova was a central figure in the Russian avant-garde, known for her ability to synthesise modern European art movements with traditional Russian folk culture. This work reflects her deep engagement with the aesthetic of religious icons and lubok prints, which were popular Russian folk woodcuts. By adopting the flattened perspective and bold, simplified forms of these traditional sources, Goncharova moved away from the academic realism that dominated the period.
The composition is divided into distinct registers, reminiscent of a multi-panel iconostasis. The upper section features a sun and moon flanking a stylised floral arch, creating a cosmic frame for the narrative scenes below. The central panels depict the Nativity on the left and the Resurrection on the right, both rendered with the stark, direct lines characteristic of her Neo-Primitivist phase. The figures are elongated and simplified, prioritising symbolic clarity over anatomical precision. The bottom register contains smaller, individual vignettes of trees and plants, which echo the decorative nature of folk art.
Goncharova used a warm, earthy palette dominated by ochre, terracotta, and deep blues. The application of paint is direct, avoiding unnecessary blending or shading. This approach allows the raw energy of the brushwork to remain visible, connecting the work to the folk traditions she admired. Her interest in these motifs was not merely nostalgic; she used them to construct a new visual language that felt distinctly Russian while participating in the broader European shift toward abstraction. This piece captures the tension between her formal training and her desire to return to the roots of visual storytelling, resulting in a composition that feels both ancient and modern.
