A classic Ukiyo-e woodblock print by Katsukawa Shunjō, capturing the kabuki actor Ichikawa Monosuke II in a traditional pose.
This woodblock print by Katsukawa Shunjō depicts the kabuki actor Ichikawa Monosuke II. Shunjō was a member of the Katsukawa school, which gained recognition for its realistic approach to actor portraiture, known as yakusha-e. Unlike the stylised, idealised figures common in earlier prints, the Katsukawa artists focused on capturing the specific facial features and individual expressions of performers on the stage.
The composition shows the actor in a standing pose, wearing a layered kimono with a sword tucked into his obi. The figure is positioned against a simplified background, which includes stylized pine trees and horizontal bands suggesting a distant horizon. This arrangement directs attention to the actor, whose posture and gaze convey a sense of dramatic tension. The colour palette is restrained, relying on muted ochre, soft red, and neutral tones, which is characteristic of the period before the introduction of more complex, multi-coloured printing techniques.
Katsukawa Shunjō was a pupil of Katsukawa Shunshō, the founder of the school. His work follows the established conventions of the genre, where the actor is presented as a recognisable individual rather than a generic archetype. The print demonstrates the technical precision required in the carving and printing process, with clean lines defining the folds of the garments and the contours of the actor's face. The signature of the artist appears on the right side of the print, a standard practice for identifying the creator of the design. This work provides a window into the theatrical culture of Edo-period Japan, documenting the appearance and costume of a specific performer during the late 18th century.
