A classic ukiyo-e woodblock print by Katsukawa Shunei, capturing the kabuki actor Ichikawa Monnosuke II in a dramatic samurai role.
This woodblock print by Katsukawa Shunei depicts the kabuki actor Ichikawa Monnosuke II in a samurai role. Shunei was a student of Katsukawa Shunsho and became a prominent figure in the Katsukawa school, which focused on realistic portrayals of actors rather than the idealised figures common in earlier ukiyo-e works. This specific print belongs to the yakusha-e genre, which translates to actor prints, serving as a form of celebrity portraiture for the theatre-going public of Edo-period Japan.
The composition is defined by the bold, confident lines characteristic of Shunei's style. The actor is shown in a dynamic stance, his hand resting on the hilt of his sword, conveying a sense of tension and readiness. The costume features geometric patterns, including a hexagonal motif on the outer garment, which adds visual texture to the figure. The background is kept minimal, allowing the focus to remain entirely on the actor's expressive facial features and posture. The use of a limited colour palette, typical of prints from this era, emphasises the graphic quality of the design.
Shunei's approach to portraiture often involved capturing the specific personality of the actor, moving away from the generic features seen in the works of his predecessors. This print provides a clear example of the Katsukawa school's focus on individual characterisation. The print is a fine example of Japanese woodblock printing techniques, where the interplay between line weight and negative space creates a balanced and visually engaging image. It remains a representative piece of the late eighteenth-century theatrical culture in Japan, documenting the appearance and style of a popular performer of the time.
