Carlo Carrà painted I nuotatori (The Swimmers) in 1929, a period when his work moved away from the kinetic energy of Futurism toward the more stable, monumental forms of the Novecento Italiano movement. This shift reflects a broader interest among Italian artists of the interwar years in returning to classical order and structural clarity.
The composition depicts a serene coastal scene where figures interact with the water. The swimmers are rendered with simplified, solid volumes, their bodies possessing a sculptural quality that anchors them within the fluid environment.
