A fine nineteenth-century engraving by William Callio Roffe, depicting John Gibson's classical sculpture of the mythological youth Hylas and the water nymphs.
This engraving by William Callio Roffe reproduces the celebrated marble sculpture Hylas and the Nymphs, originally executed by the Welsh sculptor John Gibson. The work depicts a scene from Greek mythology where the youth Hylas, a companion of Heracles, is abducted by water nymphs while fetching water from a spring. Roffe, a skilled engraver known for his work in the Art Journal, captures the smooth, idealised forms of the original marble with precision.
The composition follows the Neoclassical tradition, prioritising balance, clarity, and a restrained emotional tone. The figures are arranged in a triangular formation, with the central figure of Hylas flanked by two nymphs. Their postures reflect the influence of antique statuary, which Gibson studied extensively during his long residence in Rome. The drapery is rendered with fine lines to suggest the weight and texture of fabric, while the anatomical modelling of the figures demonstrates a clear focus on human proportion and grace.
As a print, this work serves as a record of nineteenth-century sculptural practice. It demonstrates the technical ability of the engraver to translate the three-dimensional volume of stone into a two-dimensional medium. The tonal gradations across the figures create a sense of depth and form, mimicking the play of light on polished marble. This print provides an opportunity to examine the aesthetic values of the Victorian era, specifically the fascination with classical antiquity and the desire to disseminate high-art subjects to a wider audience through reproductive printmaking. The clean, monochromatic palette ensures that the focus remains entirely on the sculptural form and the narrative interaction between the figures.
