A detailed miniature by Jean Fouquet from the 'Grandes Chroniques de France', depicting the historical campaign of Hugh Capet in Artois.
This miniature originates from the 'Grandes Chroniques de France', a significant historical manuscript commissioned for the French royal court. Jean Fouquet, a master of the French Renaissance, demonstrates his command of spatial composition and narrative clarity in this scene. The work depicts the historical figure Hugh Capet, the first King of the Franks of the Capetian dynasty, during his campaign to secure the fortresses of Artois.
Fouquet employs a distinct approach to perspective, placing the viewer at a slight elevation to observe the military action. To the left, a figure stands upon a drawbridge, interacting with the occupants of the fortress. The architectural elements, including the crenellated walls and the distant towers, provide a sense of scale and structural realism typical of the period. To the right, a Gothic structure houses a group of figures, perhaps representing the ecclesiastical or noble observers of the event. The figures are rendered with precise attention to their contemporary attire, featuring tunics, hose, and headgear that reflect the fashion of the mid-fifteenth century.
The colour palette is balanced, utilising deep blues, reds, and earthy tones to distinguish the various groups of soldiers and courtiers. The lighting is even, avoiding dramatic shadows to ensure that every detail of the narrative remains visible. Fouquet’s ability to integrate historical subject matter with the aesthetic conventions of his time makes this piece a clear example of the high standards of royal manuscript production in fifteenth-century France. The work remains a primary source for understanding how medieval chroniclers visualised the events of their past, blending historical record with the artistic sensibilities of the Renaissance era.
