Beskrivning
A modernist study of a house framed by trees, rendered in soft, rhythmic brushstrokes and a palette of pinks and blues.
Grace Cossington Smith was a pioneer of Australian Modernism, known for her application of colour theory and rhythmic brushwork. This work displays her characteristic approach to domestic subjects, where the structure of a building is broken down into a series of light-filled planes. The composition is framed by the verticality of tree trunks, which act as a screen between the viewer and the house.
Her technique involves the use of small, distinct strokes of paint that create a sense of movement across the surface. The palette is dominated by soft pinks, blues, and ochres, reflecting her interest in the way light interacts with architectural forms. Rather than seeking photographic accuracy, she prioritises the emotional and sensory experience of the scene. The house itself is rendered with simplified geometry, yet it retains a sense of solidity through the careful modulation of tone.
Cossington Smith often painted the surroundings of her home in Turramurra, New South Wales. Her work from the 1920s shows a clear engagement with European Post-Impressionist ideas, particularly the work of Cézanne, while maintaining a distinctively Australian quality of light. The interplay between the foreground foliage and the background structure creates a shallow depth, drawing the eye across the canvas in a rhythmic pattern. This print captures the texture of the original oil paint, preserving the energy of her application. The work remains a significant example of how early twentieth-century artists in Australia adapted international styles to interpret their own immediate environment.
