A refined surimono print by Kubo Shunman, featuring a cuckoo in flight before a full moon, accompanied by traditional Japanese kyoka poetry.
This work by Kubo Shunman is a fine example of the surimono tradition, a genre of privately commissioned woodblock prints often exchanged among poets and connoisseurs in Edo-period Japan. Shunman, a polymath active in the late eighteenth and early nineteenth centuries, was known for his refined aesthetic and his active participation in literary circles. This piece combines visual imagery with calligraphic poetry, a hallmark of the surimono format where the text and the illustration function as a unified composition.
The subject is a hototogisu, or lesser cuckoo, depicted in flight against a full moon. The bird is rendered with delicate brushwork, capturing its motion across the silk surface. The moon, a pale circular form, provides a subtle contrast to the muted tones of the background. The surrounding calligraphy consists of kyoka, or mad verse, which was a popular form of humorous or satirical poetry during this era. The integration of the bird and the moon with the vertical columns of text creates a balanced, meditative arrangement typical of Shunman's output.
Shunman was a student of Kitao Shigemasa and developed a distinct style that favoured elegance over the more boisterous imagery found in commercial prints of the time. His work often reflects the tastes of the literati, who valued subtle colour palettes and sophisticated themes. The use of silk as a medium suggests this was a high-quality production, intended for a discerning audience. The composition relies on negative space to evoke the atmosphere of a night scene, allowing the viewer to focus on the interplay between the avian form and the poetic inscriptions. This print remains a representative specimen of the collaborative nature of Japanese print culture, where artists, poets, and patrons worked in close proximity to produce works of art for private circulation.
