A minimalist ink painting of the monk Hotei by the celebrated Edo-period artist Ogata Kōrin, capturing the figure with fluid, expressive brushwork.
This ink painting depicts Hotei, the Zen Buddhist monk often identified as one of the Seven Lucky Gods in Japanese folklore. Ogata Kōrin, a central figure of the Rinpa school, employs a minimalist approach here. The work relies on the economy of the brush, where a few deliberate strokes define the figure of the monk. Hotei is shown with his characteristic large, exposed belly and a jovial expression, leaning against his oversized cloth sack. The contrast between the dark, saturated ink used for his robes and the lighter, fluid lines of his anatomy demonstrates the artist's control over the medium.
Kōrin is widely recognised for his decorative style, yet this piece reveals his ability to work within the tradition of zenga, or Zen painting. The composition is sparse, focusing entirely on the presence of the subject against the negative space of the paper. The signature and seal on the left side confirm the attribution to Kōrin, who was active during the Genroku period. His work often bridged the gap between professional painting and the refined aesthetic sensibilities of the Kyoto merchant class. This particular study captures the lighthearted nature associated with Hotei, who is traditionally viewed as a bringer of contentment and abundance. The simplicity of the execution invites the viewer to focus on the gesture and the character of the line, rather than on realistic detail. It is a fine example of how Edo-period artists utilised ink wash techniques to convey personality and humour with minimal visual information.
