Beskrivning
A 1949 oil painting by Wifredo Lam, featuring elongated, totem-like figures and a fusion of Afro-Cuban motifs with Surrealist abstraction.
Horizons chauds, painted by Wifredo Lam in 1949, represents the synthesis of European modernist techniques and the cultural heritage of the Caribbean. Lam, who spent time in Paris and associated with the Surrealist circle, returned to Cuba in 1941. This return prompted a shift in his visual language, as he began to incorporate Afro-Cuban motifs and spiritual iconography into his work.
The composition features elongated, totem-like figures that occupy a shallow, ambiguous space. These forms suggest a fusion of human, animal, and botanical elements, rendered with sharp, angular lines. The background consists of muted, earthy tones, which contrast with the lighter, more linear structures in the foreground. This creates a sense of tension between the organic and the mechanical.
Lam often utilised a restricted palette to focus attention on the structural arrangement of his subjects. In this piece, the interplay of vertical and horizontal lines suggests a rhythmic, almost musical quality. The figures appear to emerge from a dense, atmospheric environment, reflecting the artist's interest in the intersection of myth, memory, and the physical world. By blending the automatic drawing methods of the Surrealists with the visual vocabulary of Santería, Lam created a distinct aesthetic that avoids simple classification. The work remains a primary example of his ability to merge disparate cultural influences into a cohesive, singular vision. It invites the viewer to consider the relationship between the seen and the unseen, as well as the historical layers embedded within the Caribbean experience.
