An allegorical engraving from the Seven Virtues series, depicting Hope amidst a turbulent sea and scenes of human struggle.
This engraving, titled Spes (Hope), forms part of a series depicting the Seven Virtues. Designed by Pieter Bruegel the Elder and executed by the engraver Philips Galle, the work presents a complex allegorical scene. The central figure of Hope stands amidst a turbulent sea, holding a shovel and an anchor, which are traditional symbols of her virtue. She remains calm while the surrounding environment is filled with chaos, including shipwrecks, prisoners in chains, and buildings under construction.
Bruegel employs a dense, narrative style that invites close inspection. The composition is divided between the stability of the land and the unpredictable nature of the water. Figures in the background engage in various tasks, such as firefighting and construction, suggesting that human activity continues despite the surrounding turmoil. The inclusion of a large fish in the foreground adds a surreal, almost nightmarish quality to the maritime disaster. The Latin inscription at the bottom translates to: 'The persuasion of hope is most pleasant, and necessary for life among so many and almost intolerable miseries.'
This print reflects the Northern Renaissance interest in moralising themes and the human condition. The technical execution by Galle captures the fine lines and textures of Bruegel's original drawing, from the swirling waves to the architectural details of the fortress.
