Robert Delaunay produced this large-scale work in 1914, capturing the spirit of early twentieth-century technological progress. The painting commemorates Louis Bleriot, the French aviator who completed the first flight across the English Channel in 1909. Delaunay moves away from traditional representation, opting instead for a composition defined by circular forms and chromatic contrast.
The canvas features concentric discs and fragmented shapes that suggest the mechanics of flight and the sensation of speed. Within the abstract arrangement, one can discern the silhouette of the Eiffel Tower and the propeller of an aeroplane. These elements act as markers of modernity, grounding the work in the Parisian context of the era.
