This print originates from the Hokusai shashin gafu, or Hokusai's Album of Pictures from Nature, a collection that demonstrates the artist's interest in capturing the essence of his subjects through simplified forms and expressive brushwork. Katsushika Hokusai, a master of the Ukiyo-e tradition, moved beyond the conventional depictions of his contemporaries to explore a more direct, observational approach to drawing.
The figure depicted is rendered with a deliberate economy of line.
