A classic woodblock print by Utagawa Hiroshige depicting a bustling teahouse at Hodogaya station, featuring traditional Japanese travellers and pine trees.
This woodblock print by Utagawa Hiroshige depicts Hodogaya, the fourth station along the Tokaido road, which connected Edo to Kyoto. As part of the Kyoka iri Tokaido series, the composition integrates a kyoka poem into the upper section of the print, blending visual narrative with literary tradition. The scene captures a moment of rest for travellers at a roadside teahouse, sheltered by large, dark pine trees that frame the composition.
Hiroshige employs a clear, balanced arrangement to guide the viewer through the space. The foreground features the teahouse with its green canopy and hanging lanterns, where figures sit on tatami mats. Beyond this, the path continues into the distance, flanked by rolling hills and further vegetation. The artist uses a controlled colour palette, relying on soft greens, muted blues, and earthy tones to define the environment. The lines are precise, characteristic of the ukiyo-e style, providing structure to both the architectural elements and the natural forms of the trees.
The Tokaido series remains a significant record of travel in nineteenth-century Japan. Hiroshige focuses on the atmosphere of the journey, documenting the daily life of common people as they traverse the route. By including the kyoka poem, the print invites the viewer to engage with the work on multiple levels, appreciating both the aesthetic qualities of the scene and the cultural context of the period. This print demonstrates the technical skill involved in the woodblock printing process, particularly in the layering of colours and the clarity of the printed lines. It offers a view into the social and physical geography of the Tokaido, presented with the clarity and observation that define Hiroshige's approach to the genre.
