A refined surimono woodblock print by Kubo Shunman, depicting a quiet scene at the Egara Tenjin Shrine with integrated calligraphy.
This woodblock print by Kubo Shunman belongs to the genre of surimono, which are privately commissioned prints often exchanged among poets and connoisseurs. Shunman was a central figure in the development of this refined style, known for its technical sophistication and integration of text with image. The work depicts a scene at the Egara Tenjin Shrine in Kamakura, a location steeped in historical and literary associations. A standing figure gestures towards a flowering plum tree, while a seated companion holds a basket, creating a quiet narrative moment on a bridge.
The composition is characteristic of the Edo period aesthetic, prioritising negative space and delicate line work over dense colour. The inclusion of calligraphy, which weaves through the upper left quadrant, is integral to the print, as surimono were frequently designed to accompany kyoka (humorous or witty verse). The muted palette, featuring soft ochres, greys, and subtle pinks, reflects the high-quality pigments and paper used in these exclusive editions.
Shunman demonstrates a mastery of balance, ensuring the figures and the natural elements exist in harmony. The print avoids the dramatic flair of commercial theatre prints, opting instead for a restrained, scholarly elegance. The attention to detail in the garments and the subtle texture of the bridge planks reveal the skill of the carvers and printers involved in the production. This piece offers a glimpse into the intellectual circles of late eighteenth and early nineteenth-century Japan, where art and literature were inextricably linked. It remains a fine example of the surimono tradition, where the physical object serves as a vehicle for poetic expression and visual contemplation.
