A detailed woodblock print by Kubo Shunman depicting the traditional construction of the Tsurugaoka Hachiman Shrine in Kamakura.
This woodblock print by Kubo Shunman depicts the construction of the Tsurugaoka Hachiman Shrine in Kamakura. As a prominent figure in the Ukiyo-e tradition, Shunman was known for his refined approach to surimono, which were privately commissioned prints often exchanged among poets and artists. This work captures the manual labour involved in traditional Japanese carpentry, focusing on the precise movements of the workers as they shape large timber beams.
The composition is balanced, with the vertical mass of a large tree on the right providing a natural anchor for the scene. The workers are positioned around the heavy wooden beams, using traditional tools such as adzes and chisels. Their postures are rendered with clarity, showing the physical effort required for such architectural projects. The inclusion of calligraphic text in the upper left corner integrates the visual narrative with literary elements, a common practice in the surimono format. The colour palette is restrained, relying on soft earth tones and muted washes that allow the line work to remain the primary focus.
Shunman demonstrates a keen eye for detail in the depiction of the tools and the wood shavings scattered on the ground. The scene avoids unnecessary embellishment, opting instead for a documentary style that reflects the historical interest in the Kamakura period. The print serves as a record of both the architectural heritage of the region and the craftsmanship of the era. By focusing on the human element of the construction process, the artist provides a grounded perspective on a significant historical site. The work remains a fine example of the technical skill involved in late eighteenth and early nineteenth-century Japanese printmaking, where the collaboration between artist, carver, and printer resulted in works of exceptional quality.
