A classic Hilye-i Şerif by the master Ottoman calligrapher Hafiz Osman, featuring precise script and gold illumination.
This Hilye-i Şerif is a masterwork by the Ottoman calligrapher Hafiz Osman. The hilye is a literary genre describing the physical appearance and character of the Prophet Muhammad. In the Ottoman tradition, these descriptions were transformed into highly structured visual compositions. Hafiz Osman is credited with refining the classical layout of the hilye, which typically includes a central circular medallion containing the primary text, flanked by smaller medallions representing the four Rightly Guided Caliphs.
The composition follows a precise hierarchy. At the top, the basmala appears in a rectangular panel, executed in elegant thuluth script. The central circular text, written in naskh, details the physical attributes of the Prophet. Below this, a secondary panel contains a Quranic verse, followed by a final section detailing the Prophet's character and the calligrapher's signature. The entire work is enclosed within a border of gold illumination, featuring floral motifs that frame the text without distracting from its legibility.
The technical execution demonstrates the precision required of a master calligrapher. The contrast between the black ink and the gold-leaf illumination creates a sense of balance. The illumination, or tezhip, employs delicate vegetal scrolls that reflect the aesthetic standards of the late seventeenth-century Ottoman court. Hafiz Osman's influence on the development of Ottoman calligraphy is significant, as his proportions for the letters became the standard for subsequent generations of scribes. This print captures the fine details of the original manuscript, preserving the interplay between the geometric structure of the layout and the fluid motion of the script. It is an example of the intersection between religious devotion and artistic discipline in the Islamic tradition.
