This work by Pieter Stalpaert captures the characteristic approach to rural scenery prevalent in the early seventeenth-century Dutch Golden Age. The composition employs a traditional three-part division, guiding the viewer from the immediate foreground, where a lone rider pauses on a rise, through the middle ground containing farm buildings, and finally toward the distant, hazy horizon. Stalpaert, who was active in Amsterdam, often focused on these wooded, undulating terrains that reflect the regional interest in the natural world.

The palette is dominated by earthy tones, ranging from deep umbers and ochres in the foreground to the pale, atmospheric greys and yellows of the expansive sky.
