Beskrivning
A refined colour woodcut by Lucien Pissarro depicting two women hanging laundry, showcasing the artist's mastery of printmaking and decorative composition.
Lucien Pissarro, the eldest son of Camille Pissarro, was a central figure in the development of the woodcut as a fine art medium during the late nineteenth century. This work, titled 'Het ophangen van de was' (Hanging the Washing), reflects his interest in the decorative potential of printmaking and his connection to the Arts and Crafts movement. Pissarro moved to London in 1890, where he founded the Eragny Press, focusing on the production of books that integrated typography with wood-engraved illustrations.
The composition depicts two women engaged in the domestic task of hanging laundry. The scene is framed within a vertical border, a common device in Pissarro's graphic work that draws inspiration from Japanese ukiyo-e prints. The figures are rendered with clean, deliberate lines, and the colour palette is restrained, relying on soft, muted tones that harmonise with the paper stock. The wooden wash tub and the basket of linens provide a sense of grounded reality, yet the overall treatment remains stylised and rhythmic.
Unlike the spontaneous brushwork of his father's Impressionist canvases, this woodcut demonstrates a disciplined approach to form and pattern. The repetition of the folds in the fabric and the foliage at the base of the frame creates a balanced visual structure. Pissarro's technique involves the careful layering of colour blocks, a process that requires precision and foresight. This print captures a quiet, everyday moment, elevating a mundane chore through the application of traditional craft techniques. It is a representative example of his graphic output during the 1890s, a period when he sought to bridge the gap between fine art and the decorative arts through his work at the Eragny Press.
