A detailed pastoral scene by Jan van Gool, depicting a rural milking session surrounded by livestock and a quiet Dutch farmhouse.
Jan van Gool, a painter and biographer of Dutch artists, produced this work during the later stages of the Dutch Golden Age tradition. The painting depicts a quiet, rural scene focused on the daily routine of milking. A man in a red jacket sits on a stool, milking a cow, while a woman assists him. The composition is framed by a large, dark tree on the left, which creates a natural archway leading the eye toward the distant, hazy horizon.
The foreground contains a variety of livestock, including goats, sheep, and a recumbent cow, all rendered with attention to their individual textures and forms. Two dogs occupy the right side of the frame, adding a sense of movement to the otherwise still, pastoral setting. The architecture of the small farmhouse is modest, blending into the surrounding foliage. The light is soft and diffused, typical of the Dutch approach to atmospheric perspective, which allows the distant hills to recede gently into the background.
Van Gool demonstrates a clear interest in the agrarian life of the eighteenth-century Netherlands. The work avoids excessive drama, choosing instead to document the mundane activities of farm life with technical precision. The palette relies on earthy tones, greens, and muted blues, reflecting the natural environment of the Dutch countryside. This piece provides a view into the historical preoccupation with rural subjects, a theme that remained popular among collectors of the period. The balance between the human figures, the animals, and the expansive sky creates a sense of order and calm. It is a representative example of the late Dutch pastoral style, where the focus remains on the harmonious relationship between the inhabitants and their environment.
