A detailed topographical ink and wash drawing by Jacobus Stellingwerff, depicting the historic Groenewoude Castle as it appeared in 1382.
This topographical drawing by Jacobus Stellingwerff depicts the historic Groenewoude Castle near Woudenberg. Stellingwerff was a prolific Dutch draughtsman known for his extensive documentation of castles, manor houses, and churches across the Netherlands. His work provides a visual record of structures that have often since been altered or destroyed, making his output a valuable resource for architectural historians.
The composition presents the castle as it appeared in the late medieval period, specifically referencing the year 1382. The artist employs a clear, linear style, using ink outlines to define the structure of the gatehouse and the main building. Subtle grey washes provide depth and shadow, suggesting the reflective surface of the surrounding moat and the volume of the stone walls. The trees flanking the scene are rendered with delicate, repetitive strokes, framing the architecture without obscuring the details of the gables and windows.
Stellingwerff often worked from older sketches or historical accounts to reconstruct these sites, as his own career took place centuries after the period he frequently depicted. This drawing captures the functional, defensive nature of the site, with its drawbridge and fortified gatehouse. The inclusion of the title and date at the bottom of the sheet is characteristic of his systematic approach to archiving Dutch heritage. The work is executed with a focus on clarity and accuracy, reflecting the period interest in local history and the preservation of national identity through art. The muted palette and restrained technique ensure that the architectural form remains the primary subject, offering a window into the medieval past as interpreted by an early eighteenth-century observer.
