A detailed topographical drawing of Drakenburg Castle by Jacobus Stellingwerff, dated 1725, rendered in ink and wash.
This topographical drawing by Jacobus Stellingwerff depicts Drakenburg Castle near Soestdijk as it appeared in the early eighteenth century. Stellingwerff was a prolific draughtsman known for his extensive documentation of Dutch architecture, castles, and manor houses. His work provides a record of buildings that have since been altered or destroyed.
The drawing employs a combination of ink outlines and grey wash to define the structure of the castle. The central tower, flanked by two gabled wings, dominates the composition. Stellingwerff uses a measured approach to perspective, ensuring the architectural details remain clear. The surrounding trees are rendered with loose, repetitive strokes, providing a contrast to the rigid geometry of the masonry. The artist includes a clear inscription at the base, identifying the location and the date of 1725.
Stellingwerff produced hundreds of such drawings during his career, often working from his own observations or copying older prints. His style is functional rather than decorative, prioritising the accurate representation of the building over atmospheric effects. The use of a limited palette of ink and wash reflects the standard practice for topographical documentation of the period. This print captures a specific moment in the history of the Dutch countryside, offering a view of a site that remains a subject of interest for local historians and architectural researchers. The clarity of the lines and the balanced composition make this an example of the methodical documentation common in the Netherlands during the eighteenth century.
