A satirical etching from 1620 by Claes Jansz. Visscher (II) commenting on the religious and political controversies of the Dutch Golden Age.
This etching by Claes Jansz. Visscher (II) functions as a piece of political and religious satire from the Dutch Golden Age. Produced in 1620, the work addresses the theological conflicts surrounding the Remonstrants, or Arminians, during the Twelve Years' Truce. The composition is divided into two distinct sections: a complex visual scene at the top and a substantial block of printed text below.
The upper portion depicts a crowded, allegorical scene featuring figures in contemporary dress, including clergy and commoners. The central action involves the placement of a hood, or 'kaproen', upon a figure identified as Petrus Bertius. This act serves as a visual metaphor for the perceived apostasy or theological deviation of the Arminians. The scene is populated with various symbolic elements, including books, tools, and architectural details that provide context for the specific religious debates of the period. The figures are rendered with precise, descriptive lines characteristic of Visscher's printmaking style.
The lower portion contains a dialogue, or 'samen-spraeck', between three characters named Koomen, Joost, and Kees. This text provides a narrative framework for the visual imagery, detailing the perceived errors of Bertius and the broader implications of the Arminian controversy. The inclusion of such extensive text indicates that the print was intended for a literate audience capable of engaging with both the visual symbolism and the theological arguments presented.
As a historical document, this print captures the intensity of the religious divisions that shaped the early seventeenth-century Netherlands. Visscher, a prolific publisher and engraver, utilised the medium of the print to disseminate political commentary to a wide public. The work remains a primary source for understanding the intersection of art, religion, and public discourse in the Dutch Republic.
