Heron and Willow - Sesshū Tōyō

Sesshū Tōyō remains the most celebrated master of ink painting in Japanese history. This work, Heron and Willow, demonstrates the economy of means characteristic of the Muromachi period. The artist employs a monochromatic palette, using varying concentrations of ink to define form and space. The heron, perched upon a willow branch, is rendered with precise, sharp strokes that capture the bird's posture and alertness. The willow branch itself is depicted with broader, more fluid brushwork, suggesting the weight and texture of the wood.

The composition relies heavily on the concept of negative space, or ma. By leaving large areas of the paper untouched, the artist creates a sense of atmosphere and stillness.
