A serene pastoral watercolour by Dutch artist Anton L. Koster, depicting a shepherdess and her flock resting beneath a stone viaduct.
Anton L. Koster, a painter associated with the later generation of the Hague School, is recognised for his atmospheric depictions of the Dutch countryside. This work, titled 'Herderin met schapen, bij een viaduct', captures a quiet, pastoral scene where a shepherdess tends to her flock beneath the shadow of a stone viaduct. The composition relies on the contrast between the solid, architectural form of the bridge and the soft, organic textures of the grazing sheep and surrounding foliage.
Koster employs a muted palette, typical of the Hague School, to convey the damp, diffused light often found in the Netherlands. The watercolour medium allows for a delicate application of pigment, particularly in the rendering of the grassy foreground and the misty atmosphere receding into the archway. The shepherdess, dressed in a blue skirt and red headscarf, provides a small but necessary point of human interest within the larger, tranquil setting. Her presence anchors the scene, suggesting a daily rhythm of rural life that remains largely unchanged by the imposing structure of the viaduct.
The artist demonstrates a keen observation of light and shadow, using the arch of the bridge to frame the background and create a sense of depth. The brushwork is controlled yet fluid, reflecting the artist's technical proficiency with water-based media. This piece offers a glimpse into the late nineteenth-century fascination with rural simplicity, a common theme among Dutch painters who sought to document the vanishing traditions of the countryside. The work remains a fine example of Koster's ability to imbue a modest subject with a sense of calm and quiet observation, avoiding unnecessary drama in favour of a truthful representation of the environment.
