A detailed nineteenth-century engraving by Johann Gottlieb Abraham Frenzel, depicting a pastoral scene after a painting by Cornelis van Poelenburch.
This fine art print is an etching and engraving by Johann Gottlieb Abraham Frenzel, a German artist who served as the curator of the Print Cabinet in Dresden. The work is a reproduction of a painting by the Dutch Golden Age artist Cornelis van Poelenburch. It depicts a serene pastoral scene where a herd of cattle gathers in a shallow stream, framed by the ruins of an ancient structure and a rustic wooden bridge.
Frenzel demonstrates technical precision in his handling of the burin and etching needle. He captures the atmospheric quality of the sky and the varied textures of the stone ruins, foliage, and animal hides through a range of cross-hatching and stippling techniques. The composition follows the conventions of seventeenth-century Dutch Italianate painting, which often combined classical architectural fragments with idyllic, sun-drenched rural life.
The lower margin of the print features the original title in both Italian and French, alongside the coat of arms of the Royal Gallery of Dresden. This inclusion provides historical context, identifying the print as part of a project to document the holdings of the Dresden collection. The work reflects the nineteenth-century tradition of reproductive printmaking, which allowed audiences to study and appreciate masterworks from distant public collections.
The scene is balanced and quiet, focusing on the interaction between the figures and their environment. The cattle are rendered with anatomical care, while the human figures are integrated into the composition as part of the daily rhythm of the countryside. This print offers a window into the aesthetic values of the early nineteenth century, where the study of historical European painting was a primary pursuit for artists and collectors alike. The monochromatic palette emphasises the clarity of the line work and the structural integrity of the original composition.
