This engraving by Sebald Beham, dated 1542, depicts the classical struggle between Hercules and the centaurs. Beham, a member of the group known as the Little Masters, produced small-scale prints that demonstrate technical precision and a mastery of the burin. The composition is crowded, with figures overlapping to create a sense of chaotic movement within a confined space. Hercules occupies the centre, engaged in physical combat with multiple centaurs. The artist employs a cross-hatching technique to define musculature and texture, providing volume to the figures against a dark, hatched background.

The inscription at the top, 'ARVMNA HERCULIS', translates to 'The Labours of Hercules', framing the scene within the context of the hero's trials. Beham's approach to the human form reflects the influence of Italian Renaissance anatomy, adapted to the Northern European tradition of detailed graphic work. The centaurs are rendered with a blend of human and equine features, their expressions and postures conveying the intensity of the fight. The print is signed with the artist's monogram, 'ISB', and the date in the lower right corner, which is characteristic of his practice.

As a printmaker, Beham was instrumental in the dissemination of classical themes to a wider audience.
