A 1796 engraving by Christian Friedrich Stölzel depicting Helena Fourment, based on the original portrait by Peter Paul Rubens held in the Dresden collection.
This engraving by Christian Friedrich Stölzel, dated 1796, reproduces a portrait of Helena Fourment, the second wife of the Flemish master Peter Paul Rubens. Stölzel, a German engraver active in Dresden, produced this work to document the holdings of the Gemäldegalerie Alte Meister. The print captures the subject within a formal oval frame, set against a background of fine, horizontal hatching that provides a sense of depth and texture.
Stölzel employs precise line work to translate the painterly qualities of the original oil portrait into the medium of engraving. The subject is depicted with a soft, contemplative expression, her hair styled in loose curls that fall to one side. The drapery of her garment is rendered with subtle gradations of tone, demonstrating the technical skill required to replicate the luminosity of the original painting. Below the portrait, the print includes a detailed cartouche featuring a coat of arms, flanked by bilingual inscriptions in Italian and French that provide the dimensions and provenance of the original painting held in the Dresden collection.
As a reproductive print, this work serves as a historical record of how eighteenth-century audiences engaged with Old Master paintings. It reflects the period's interest in cataloguing and disseminating European art through high-quality printmaking. The composition remains faithful to the Baroque sensibilities of Rubens, while the engraving style itself is characteristic of the late eighteenth-century German school. This piece offers a clear view into the intersection of print culture and museum history, providing a window into the aesthetic values of the Dresden court during the late Enlightenment.
