A 1916 oil painting by John French Sloan depicting an artist at work in a coastal setting, captured with expressive brushwork.
John French Sloan, a central figure of the Ashcan School, painted this work in 1916. The composition depicts Helen Taylor, a fellow artist, engaged in the act of painting outdoors. She stands before an easel, her posture focused as she captures the view before her. The scene is set in a coastal environment, with water and distant hills visible in the background. Sloan employs a direct, painterly approach, using visible brushstrokes to define the grassy foreground and the atmospheric quality of the sky.
The palette consists of cool greens, soft pinks, and muted blues, reflecting the natural light of the setting. Sloan avoids excessive detail, preferring to convey the essence of the moment through colour and form. The subject is positioned slightly to the left of the centre, creating a balanced view that draws the eye from the artist to the canvas on the easel, and finally to the water beyond. This work captures the spirit of plein air painting, a practice that allowed artists to observe the immediate effects of light and weather on their surroundings.
Sloan was known for his interest in the daily lives of people, often focusing on urban subjects in New York. However, his work also includes studies of figures in nature, where he applied the same observational rigour. This painting provides a glimpse into the working process of an artist during the early twentieth century. The inclusion of the palette and brushes in Taylor's hand adds a layer of authenticity to the scene, grounding the viewer in the reality of the creative act. The work remains a clear example of Sloan's ability to combine observational accuracy with a personal, expressive touch, avoiding unnecessary ornamentation in favour of a direct engagement with the subject matter.
