A detailed preparatory cartoon by Sahib Ram, depicting the profile of Krishna with fine ink lines and delicate watercolour accents.
This work is a preparatory cartoon by the Jaipur court artist Sahib Ram. It depicts the profile of Krishna, a central deity in Hindu tradition, intended for a larger mural composition of the Raslila. The artist employs a precise, calligraphic line to define the facial features, while the application of colour is reserved for the ornate jewellery and the elaborate turban. The paper shows signs of age, providing a neutral ground that allows the delicate ink work to remain the primary focus.
Sahib Ram was a master of the Jaipur style, known for his large-scale portraits and wall paintings. This specific drawing demonstrates the technical rigour required for mural production. The artist uses a combination of fine ink outlines and subtle washes of pigment to suggest volume and texture. The profile view is characteristic of the period, emphasising the idealised features of the deity. The jewellery, rendered with meticulous attention to detail, reflects the aesthetic preferences of the Rajput courts during the late eighteenth century. The inclusion of the peacock feather, a traditional attribute of Krishna, is integrated into the turban design with balance and clarity.
As a cartoon, this piece offers a view into the workshop practices of the time. The faint grid lines and structural markings visible on the paper indicate the process of scaling up the design for a wall surface. The work is not merely a finished portrait but a functional tool for the creation of public art. By preserving the initial stages of the creative process, this print allows for an appreciation of the draughtsmanship that underpinned the grander murals of the Jaipur palace. The composition remains focused on the divinity of the subject, captured through a disciplined and refined hand.
