A fourteenth-century Florentine devotional panel featuring the face of Christ, rendered in tempera and gold leaf.
This panel painting, attributed to the Master of the Orcagnesque Misericordia, represents a devotional image of the face of Christ. Active in Florence during the mid-fourteenth century, this anonymous artist is named for a specific altarpiece depicting the Misericordia. The work follows the tradition of the acheiropoieta, or images not made by human hands, focusing on the frontal, symmetrical visage of Christ.
The composition is defined by the use of gold leaf, which creates a luminous, flat background. This technique reflects the aesthetic priorities of the Trecento, where the physical presence of gold served to remove the subject from the mundane world. Two small angels are positioned in the upper corners, their forms rendered with delicate precision as they hold the edges of the haloed space. The face of Christ is modelled with subtle transitions of tone, showing the influence of the Orcagnesque workshop style, which balanced linear clarity with a soft approach to facial features.
At the base of the panel, an inscription provides a textual element that integrates with the decorative border. The frame itself is an integral part of the object, featuring punched gold work that echoes the patterns found within the halo. The artist employs a limited palette, relying on the contrast between the warm, metallic gold and the cooler, muted tones of the flesh and the blue garments of the angels. This work is a characteristic example of Florentine devotional art from the period, intended for private contemplation rather than large-scale public display. The condition of the panel allows for a clear view of the original gilding techniques and the precise application of tempera paint, which has retained its structural integrity over the centuries.
